Co-creating digitally enabled earth-based building systems in Ghana

M.Sc. | Winter Semester 2025 - 2026 | LV1720805

Professur Digital Design and Fabrication

T-T Professor Moritz Dörstelmann, Carolin Feldmann, Javier Fuentes

Following the successful start of our Ghanaian-German teaching cooperation and the errection of the research demonstrator RENABUMA (Kumasi, September 2025), we will launch our third co-taught Ghana-based studio, deepening our long-term cooperation with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) supported by the recently acquired Global Europe Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument – Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme.

The studio explores digital technologies for bamboo-earth hybrid construction of multi storey housing as sustainable and fully circular construction approach to mitigate the climate impact of rapid urbanization processes in Ghana and the wider sub-shara context. Together with our Ghanaian partners we will conceptualize digitally enabled decentralized micro-factories that merge locally adapted digital production models with vernacular resources. By fostering entrepreneurial opportunities while reducing investment and skill barriers we are aiming towards a technical framework for a scalable impactful implementation strategy.

Informed by local socio-econmic and climatic conditions we will explore architectural design opportunities and the material system’s potential for ecological housing and sustainable living, emphasizing climate resilience, comfort, and adaptability.

Through 1:1 prototyping of building components and digital workflows, the studio lays the groundwork for a demonstrator construction in Ghana in summer 2026.
